You can find out about the stages of Kaarlo Kivekäs’ career in an exhibition at Kouvola City Museum which opens on 23 November 2017. The exhibition is part of Finland’s independence centenary celebrations.
Lieutenant-General Karl Edward Kivekäs was born during the period of Finnish national awakening. He served abroad in challenging roles in the tumultuous great power politics before and after the turn of century and contributed to the construction of the independent Finnish defence forces. The Poikilo museums exhibition explains the varied stages of Kaarlo Kivekäs’ life and almost forgotten work to develop coastal defence, field artillery and air defence.
Kivekäs graduated from Hamina cadet school in 1890 and served in the Imperial Russian army as a major general. After the end of the civil war he returned to Finland in the summer of 1918, and went on to work in the armed forces in key positions until 1928. Kivekäs is remembered to this day in Tajikistan in Central Asia where, alongside his military duties, he worked to improve the conditions of the local population.
